With the beginning of a journey of a thousand miles for Tony Rex, I wanted to get the philosophy out first. We will each come across an infinite number of experiences, journeys, adventures, travels and experiences, but what is most important is to first get your perception joyful, vivid and peaceful.
This is not something abstract, it is to say that every experience we have must be cherished, irrespective of whether it is halfway around the world, or in your backyard. For me, at times walking down my staircase has enough novelty to keep me engrossed. At times you notice that the pattern in which the floor has been mopped and swept has changed, and at other times you notice friends from the animal kingdom - worms, moths and bugs - sharing the journey with you. The few flights of stairs for them is a near infinite set of ups and downs, never seeming to end. In spite of all this, these creatures always stay focussed on the task at hand. It is us who has encroached into their natural territory, but their resilience and adaptability never seems to amaze us.
Coming off the staircase, and onto the footpath that surrounds the apartment, I notice that at times there are so many plants that I have never noticed. I try to play Sir David Attenborough at times, and look at these through new lenses. How big some trees are, they were just plants a little while back, and now they are over six stories tall! The colours of the leaves, and the smells of the flower change according to the seasons. I always expect a specific popping sound, when I walk below a tree that shed a lot of yellow flowers - these flowers have a little air bubble in them, that pop when you step on them.
An experimental nature and a curiosity for that which is around us is what will make your travel beautiful. If you take a little bit of effort, and attune your perception, you will realise that the world is so diverse, and you will find joy in the everyday. We must learn to experience all of this, without judging, just being in the moment.
This is what will allow us to be good explorers. Travel must never be a form of escapism - then you will not be able to truly enjoy it. It must be a wonderful accompaniment to that which you already enjoy.
A spring in our steps, and a fire in our belly. The belief that we can all be better off, and serving others is that which brings us the greatest joy. The belief that it is not the year in our life, rather the life in our years that matters. To enjoy every single day.
The Tony Rex family will be those who are filled with joy and peace, at every adventure.
“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” - James Thurber
